With so much sickness going around right now, here is some guidance regarding whether or not students may need to stay home and not come to school due to a medical condition.
When to Keep Your Child Home from School: A Helpful Guide for Parents
As parents, we want our children to succeed and be present at school, but sometimes their health or well-being may require a day of rest at home. Here’s a helpful guide to determine when it’s best to keep your child home from school:
Fever: If your child has a temperature of 100.4°F (38°C) or higher, it’s best to keep them home until they’ve been fever-free for at least 24 hours without medication.
Cold or Flu Symptoms: Symptoms like persistent cough, sore throat, or body aches may mean your child is sick and needs to rest. If they’re too tired or uncomfortable to participate in school activities, it’s a good idea to stay home.
Vomiting or Diarrhea: Children should stay home for at least 24 hours after vomiting or diarrhea has stopped to help prevent spreading illness to others.
Contagious Illnesses: If your child has a contagious condition like pink eye, strep throat, or chickenpox, it’s important to keep them home to recover and prevent others from getting sick.
Severe Headache or Migraines: If your child is experiencing a severe headache or migraine, they may need rest in a quiet, dark room rather than attending school.
Rashes or Skin Conditions: If your child has a rash that may be contagious (such as impetigo), it’s important to seek medical advice and keep them home until cleared by a healthcare provider.
Above all, if you’re ever in doubt, don’t hesitate to consult with your child’s doctor to get guidance on whether they’re well enough to go back to school.
By keeping your child home when they’re unwell, you’re not only helping them recover but also preventing the spread of illness to classmates and staff. We appreciate your cooperation in keeping our school community healthy!
